Happy Olympics!!!

I've always loved the Olympics. This time around the Olympics have caused concern, frustration, uncertainty because they landed squarely in the middle of our adoption. Steve and I took a course offered by our agency when we were first 'logged in' with China, and one of the presenters said "Oh you'll be there and back LONG before the Olympics happen, don't let that stress you out". Hmm. In truth, had we stayed in that line, the Olympics would have had little direct impact on our process. I guess that's if you don't believe the Olympics to be a cause of the Slow Down in the processing of referrals. Current projections for our LID are March 2012, which is almost four years FROM NOW, not to mention the almost 2 we've waited. We switched, and received a referral much sooner, and now the Olympics HAVE impacted our adoption as we probably would be headed over right about now, except everything - flights, hotels, meals, etc - has tripled or quadrupled in price. Also, Canadians have to travel to the Canadian consulate in Beijing, which is right at the heart of the Olympic crowds.

This morning I watched the Opening Ceremonies withe Munsters, trying to impress upon them how spectacular the show really was. They were interested because it was China. Elliot was particularily curious by the Chinese military men carrying in the Olympic flag - he wondered if people from China had knees. Paxten liked the girl who sang because she had Princess Ponies in her hair. Jack was impressed by the firework footprints walking to the stadium. They ALL loved seeing the torch lit by a flying man. I haven't felt much of the Olympic spirit the last couple of years leading up to this morning, but at 8:00, 08.08.08 China time, the frustration and animosity towards the Games melted away in the first round of fireworks. I'm sure our pending travel helps, but my excitement is back.

I finally got to watch it last night - damn delay! - and it was spectacular! All the while I was thinking "she's there...she's in that country, and soon Natalie will be there to hold her!"
