"My daughter..."

Today I attended a conference offered by the Nova Scotia Hearing and Speech Centres. One lecture option was about a specific treatment proticol for cleft palate. The one about bilingualism and expressive language disorder was more appropriate for my job, but I was excited to learn more about cp therapy!

Afterwards, I approached one presenter who is a clinician with the NSHSC. I explained why I was interested and asked her a couple of questions. Specifically, I asked about waitlist and whether it would be prudent to put my name on now or if the list was short enough to wait until later. She wasn't sure, so she asked her colleague, who had not heard the rest of the conversation. The second clinician tried to clarify for whom the referral was being made, with respect to age, etc, then asked "Who is it for?" and I answered "It's my daughter." My answer was reflexive, and the first time I referred to Anna that way and without the leadup of explaining our adoption. Of course that explanation was needed as follow up...

This was the end of the day. Five minutes later I was in the car calling Steve on the cell to tell him my story. The little things make this process real and exciting.
