Truths: Known and Guessed

I've started this post several times, trying to balance documenting my feelings and occurances with Wen's feelings and privacy, ownership of her own history. There is so much of her history that we don't know. We can ask questions, probe for information, but in the end, we're at the mercy of other people from a different culture who speak a different language. We've been warned that sometimes people in China will prefer to give an answer they think you want to hear, rather than one that is the truth. How do we present this to AnnaWen? I reviewed some tape with a friend who speaks Mandarin, and she translated for me what was not translated for us when we were there. The only thing that became more clear from that process was that we do not have all the answers, even the ones we thought we had are in question. I think in the end, we'll have to tell Wen all we've been told without bias or opinion and let her decide what to believe. It makes me sad and frustrated.. and if I feel that way, imagine how she'll feel.

That's tough. I've heard the same thing about telling you what they think you want to hear??!

Very frustrating.
